You may have heard about DebiCheck through the media, from friends, or even when you have spoken to one of our helpful agents. We thought you may have some questions about it, so we’ve written up this brief blog to share some DebiCheck insight with you.

What is DebiCheck?
DebiCheck is a new type of debit order that will require you, our client, to directly authenticate your debit order arrangement with your bank.
This authentication only needs to be done once, at the beginning of the arrangement.

Why do I have to do this?
DebiCheck is for your protection. It puts you in control of the debit orders that will be processed from your account. If you do not approve the DebiCheck then the DebiCheck debit order cannot be debited from your account. This adds another layer of protection to your account and reduces the chances of having your account wrongfully debited.

DebiCheck is a regulatory requirement from the Payment Association of South Africa (PASA) to help prevent invalid debit orders being debited from your account.

How do I approve the DebiCheck?
This depends on your bank, how you use your banking channels, and how the DebiCheck mandate request is sent to you. The following options are available:

When do I have to do this?
A DebiCheck mandate needs to be approved once, at the beginning of the debit order arrangement or when the arrangement changes. If you do not approve the DebiCheck quickly it will expire.

The expiry time will depend on how the request was sent to you. Most requests expire at 19:00 on the same day the request was sent, while others expire the next day and some can expire as soon as 2 minutes after the request was sent to you.

Note that the DebiCheck regulations are currently being phased in so current debit orders (NAEDOs) may still be debited from your account until the regulation is fully implemented, even if you did not approve the DebiCheck.
